Maile is a fragrant vine, endemic to Hawaii, that grows in the cool upland forests. In olden times the maile lei was reserved for traditional use by ali'i (nobility) only. Hawaiian natives believe maile is sacred. Hula dancers commonly use maile lei to honor Laka the Goddess of Hula.
